What is Inclusion in the Workplace?

“Diversity is being invited to the party. Inclusion is being asked to dance.”

That is my favorite quote by diversity advocate Verna Myers. As it relates to the workplace, it means a genuine feeling that you are happy that I am here.

Inclusion is the key component that moves organizations diversity forward. Inclusion goes beyond tolerance to celebrating and elevating every person in the organization.

In its simplest form, inclusion ensures that no employee is left out or behind because of their uniqueness and differences as it relates to race, religion, disability, sex or other factors. Inclusion at its finest can increase both morale and productivity, encourage participation and foster innovation.

Creating inclusive cultures is an important business imperative because organizations are now more multicultural and multigenerational than ever. So, what does inclusion look and feel like in the workplace?

Employees feel:

  • Valued
  • Heard
  • Respected
  • Empowered
  • A sense of belonging
  • They can be their authentic selves

Organizations must be intentional in creating a culture to ensure that everyone feels accepted, respected and valued in the workplace. You may have an array of diversity within your organization – which is great – but if the unique perspectives of all individuals aren’t being heard, if that diversity doesn’t bring a sense of belonging to the organization, if the employees are not comfortable being their authentic selves or given equal opportunities then the impact of such diversity and inclusion efforts may be lost.

Unless you make a conscious effort to be inclusive, exclusion may occur by default. If we are to work effectively together we must learn to understand, appreciate and accept differences.

Inclusion can be a key differentiator when it comes to winning the war on talent. There are many steps on this journey and no matter where you are today LUXA Enterprises is here to help. Whether you are looking to get started or leverage the diversity in your organization, contact us today.
